Hans H. Hirsch holds the MD degree of the Albert-Ludwigs-University in Freiburg (Germany) and the MSc degree (biochemistry) of the Oregon State University in Corvallis (OR, USA). After 2 years as postgraduate fellow in molecular and cancer biology, he specialized in medical microbiology, internal medicine, and infectious diseases at the University of Basel and the University Hospital Basel in Basel (Switzerland). From 2004 to 2025, Dr Hirsch served as Professor at the Medical Faculty of the University of Basel. In 2025, Dr Hirsch accepted a professor position at the Medical Faculty at UiT The Artic University of Norway in the Department of Medical Biology in Tromsø, Norway, and an affiliated position in the Institute of Experimental Immunology at the University of Zurich, Switzerland to continue his research on virus complications in immunocompromised patients. Dr Hirsch has (co-)authored more than 200 peer-reviewed papers and contributed to guidelines in virology, infectious diseases, and transplantation. Dr. Hirsch is a Fellow of European Society Clinical Microbiology & Infectious Diseases (ESCMID), a Fellow of the American Society of Transplantation (FAST), long-time member of the Transplantation Society (TTS), the TTS-TID section, the American Transplantation Society (AST) and Infectious Disease Community of Practice (IDCOP), the European Bone Marrow Transplantation (EBMT), the European conference of Infections in Leukaemia (ECIL), the Swiss Society of Transplantation (STCS), the Swiss Society Infectious Diseases (SSID), the Swiss Transplant Cohort Study (STCS), the Swiss HIV Cohort Study (SHCS), and the International Immunocompromised Host Society ICHS (https://www.ichs.org/; past president 2022), and the European Society of Clinical Virology (ESCV). In 2024, Dr Hirsch was awarded the ESCV Gardner Lecture Award (https://escv.eu/awards/).
